Resolved Question: Are there any parts of North Carolina with New England Charm to them?
First of all let me say that I’ve spent a considerable amount of time on city-data.com reading about North Carolina. For the most part it’s seems like most of the posts turn into a grudge match between people who have lived in North Carolina their whole lives, and people who have transplanted. There doesn’t seem to be any love lost between both sides. That said, I’m not here to offend anyone, to each his own. I’m just looking for honest and objective opinions so my wife and I can make a more informed decision about our future.
We’re both from the Northeast and living in NYC at the moment (I grew up on Long Island, my wife in VT). We are ready to move out of the city but can’t really afford anywhere in the tri-state area. We had very high hopes that North Carolina would offer a nice outlet. We visited the Huntersville area recently it was by Lake Norman. After it was all over we both came away with the same impression. We felt that there didn’t seem to be any character whatsoever. From what we saw it was one main road (almost highway like) with a lot of strip malls on either side of it. Yes, this was only one town and we plan on going back down to visit again, but from what we heard this was considered one of the nicer places to live. I guess it’s all relative in terms of your definition of nice.
So, can anyone recommend some places to visit that have more character to them. Is there an area where you can park your car and walk through more of a town setting (not a parking lot). Is there A place that has good restaurants, and more of a community feel. In addition, I’ve been reading that the schools are questionable, so we would be looking for a spot with a good school system. Again, I don’t mean to offend anyone, this is just what we observed and what I’ve read. Thanks for any input.
